A phased modernization of the international E30 railway line on the Katowice–Krakow section (over 58 km), carried out by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. and co-financed from the EU's CEF "Connecting Europe" instrument. The investment, worth more than PLN 2 billion, covered the reconstruction of tracks, stations and stops as well as dozens of engineering structures: a total of 34 railway and road viaducts are being built along the route, of which 10 in new locations and 24 thoroughly rebuilt. The works were originally planned to be completed in 2014, but the investment, carried out in sections, struggled with years of delays, and the construction works and implementation of the traffic control system dragged on into subsequent years.

Significance

The modernization shortened the travel time between Katowice and Krakow by about 42 minutes ("three quarters of an hour"), enabling passenger trains to run at speeds up to 160 km/h and freight trains up to 120 km/h. The reconstruction of dozens of viaducts and the building of grade-separated crossings improved safety on the route. The line is a strategic connection between Silesia and Lesser Poland and an element of the rail corridor linking Poland with Western Europe.
