Czorsztyn-Niedzica Hydropower Complex (dam and reservoir on the Dunajec)

completedstage: operationaldelayed

A hydrotechnical complex on the Dunajec River comprising the Czorsztyn-Niedzica dam and reservoir together with a pumped-storage hydropower plant and a smaller balancing weir at Sromowce Wyżne. Construction began in 1975, and work on the reservoirs, dams and power plant was completed in 1997, with a company established the same year to operate them. The Niedzica dam is Poland's highest earth-fill dam with a central clay core – its maximum height is 56 m and its length 404 m. The Niedzica power plant operates in a pumped-storage configuration (2×46.375 MW in turbine mode). The complex serves flood protection, energy and recreational functions, impounding the waters of the Dunajec and creating Lake Czorsztyńskie. The owner is Zespół Elektrowni Wodnych Niedzica S.A. – a wholly State Treasury-owned company.

Significance

The Czorsztyn-Niedzica complex of reservoirs and dams, completed in 1997 after more than two decades of construction, is one of the largest post-war hydrotechnical investments in Poland. The Niedzica dam – the country's highest earth-fill dam (56 m) – and the reservoir on the Dunajec perform a key flood protection function for the Dunajec valley, while the accompanying pumped-storage power plant supports the National Power System. The reservoir created Lake Czorsztyńskie, which has become an important element of water management and recreation in the region.

Every fact on this card comes from the sources below. Next to each source – which fields it supports.

Independence is counted the same way the gate that admits a record counts it: subdomains and titles from one publisher are a single voice, Wikipedia is zero. That is why the number is lower than the number of links. Three is the minimum.

A “wiki” mark means the value stands on Wikipedia alone. Our count of independent sources treats it as zero, so read such a place as less firmly documented than the rest of the card – that applies to an outcome row, a figure, a date and a status alike.
