PGE has commissioned the consortium of Polimex Mostostal (consortium leader) and Siemens Energy to build two peaking gas-fired power plants: in Rybnik (Śląskie Voivodeship) and in Gryfino/Nowe Czarnowo at the Dolna Odra Power Plant (Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship). Each unit has a capacity of approx. 600 MW (nearly 1.2 GW in total) and will be built using open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) technology – as so-called peakers, started up quickly during peak demand and to balance renewable energy sources. The combined value of both contracts, including servicing, is approx. PLN 6 billion. In December 2025, both units secured 15-year contracts in the capacity market auction for the years 2030–2044, and the construction order was announced in March 2026. These are units separate from the combined-cycle gas units (CCGT) already operating on the same sites – Nowy Rybnik 882 MW and Dolna Odra 2x approx. 700 MW.

Significance

The peaking OCGT units are to supply flexible, quickly dispatchable power supporting the National Power System during periods of increased demand and balancing the growing share of non-controllable renewable sources. The investment fits into the move away from coal – it is to replace part of the worn-out coal capacity – and secures energy supplies during the transition period, complementing the combined-cycle gas units already operating on both sites.
