Nowa Wieś Ełcka energy storage facility (BESS Ełk, 200 MW / 800 MWh)

A large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) with a power of 200 MW and a capacity of 800 MWh located in Nowa Wieś Ełcka in the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship. The investment is being carried out by the Portuguese company Greenvolt, and the installation's components were supplied by BYD Energy Storage. The storage facility was connected to the 220 kV transmission grid of Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne and was undergoing the energisation stage in mid-2026, becoming one of the largest installations of its kind in Europe. The project has secured capacity market contracts effective from 2028.

Significance

The installation, with a power of 200 MW and a capacity of 800 MWh, is among the largest battery energy storage facilities in Poland and Europe, supporting the stabilisation of the national power system amid the growing share of renewable sources. Connection to the 220 kV PSE transmission grid and capacity market contracts from 2028 place the facility within the expansion of large-scale energy storage in Poland.
