A new gas-and-steam combined heat and power plant, Czechnica-2, in Siechnice near Wrocław, built by Zespół Elektrociepłowni Wrocławskich KOGENERACJA of the PGE Group (PGE Energia Ciepła). The gas-and-steam unit, with an electrical capacity of 179 MWe and a thermal capacity of 315 MWt, comprises two Siemens SGT-800 gas turbines, heat-recovery boilers and a steam turbine; it replaced the more than century-old, coal-fired Czechnica unit. The main contractor was Polimex Mostostal. Construction took about four years, and the PLN 1.4 billion investment was placed into operation in May 2025. The installation is a municipal district-heating source - it covers about 20 percent of the heat demand of Wrocław residents and all customers in the Siechnice municipality connected to the district-heating network.

Significance

A municipal district-heating source for the Wrocław agglomeration: the new unit meets about 20 percent of the heat demand of Wrocław residents and serves all customers in the Siechnice municipality connected to the network. Replacing a more than century-old coal-fired CHP plant with a high-efficiency gas-and-steam unit radically reduces the emissions of district heating in the region - CO2 emissions fall by 61 percent, that is by about 622 thousand tonnes per year, together with a manifold reduction in emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and particulates. The investment is part of the PGE Group's move away from coal in district heating.
