An interactive science centre in Warsaw's Powiśle district, at 20 Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie street, run as a cultural institution co-founded by the Capital City of Warsaw, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the Ministry of National Education. Construction of the building began in August 2008, and the facility was opened to visitors on 5 November 2010, inaugurating its activity with the multimedia show "The Big Bang". The total cost of building the facility amounted to over PLN 365 million, of which PLN 207 million was a grant from European Union funds. In June 2011 the Centre's Heavens of Copernicus planetarium was opened. The facility holds hundreds of interactive exhibits and is among the most visited institutions of this type in Poland.

Significance

The Copernicus Science Centre became the largest interactive science centre in Poland, implementing a model of popularizing knowledge based on independent experimentation. The investment, worth over PLN 365 million and largely (PLN 207 million) financed from European Union funds, was created as a joint undertaking of Warsaw's local government and the central administration. Since its opening on 5 November 2010, the facility has attracted more than a million visitors a year, and its offer was complemented by the Heavens of Copernicus planetarium opened in 2011. The building has become a recognizable landmark on the map of Warsaw's Powiśle and a model for subsequent science centres established in other Polish cities.
