A combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) unit with a capacity of approximately 450 MWe, built in Stalowa Wola (Podkarpackie Voivodeship) by Elektrociepłownia Stalowa Wola (ECSW), a company in which TAURON and PGNiG each hold a 50% stake. Construction began in 2012; after the contract with the original general contractor was terminated, the investment was repeatedly delayed. The unit was synchronized with the grid on 24 August 2020 and handed over for operation on 30 September 2020. The unit operates in cogeneration, supplying electricity to the national power system and heat for the residents of Stalowa Wola and Nisko. The original cost estimate for the investment was nearly PLN 1.6 billion.

Significance

The unit, with a capacity of approximately 450 MW, can supply electricity to around 1.2 million households while also delivering district heat to the residents of Stalowa Wola and Nisko. Carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 360 kg/MWh meet the requirements of best available techniques (BAT), and the modern gas-fired source strengthens flexible dispatchable capacity in the National Power System.
